When museums plan the excavations of human skeletal remains, an anthropological consultant is valuable to estimate the number of expected skeletons in order to produce a balanced budget for the excavation. During excavation anthropologist can assist the archaeologist to ensure proper excavation and handling of the bones.

At large skeletal excavation or excavations of poorly preserved skeletons, it is recommended to have an anthropologist employed as part of the excavation team. In this way, the preliminary registrations can be made directly during excavation.

ADBOU has in collaboration with Horsens museum written up a guide for excavation of human skeletal remains. The guide can be downloaded here
